A song was never just “covered” by Frank Sinatra. It was “reborn” by him. Regardless of whether it was sung by Neil Diamond, Jim Croce, or The Beatles, Sinatra’s rendition instantly changed its appearance to one that was serene, sophisticated, and full of passion. With each soft and meaningful syllable, he sang “Something” as though narrating his own love story, giving the impression that the song had never been written by anyone else. Sinatra expertly removed the wild exterior with “Bad Bad Leroy Brown”, replacing it with a swing vibe accompanied by opulent lounge music. Additionally, he subtly transported the listener to a universe where classic rock and traditional pop style coexisted in “Song Sung Blue”.
Frank didn’t make an effort to come across as “younger” or “more modern” when discussing classic rock. He just did what he always did best, which was to use music to convey stories in the style of Frank Sinatra. Frank Sinatra was a timeless performer who could transform any song into a part of his own legacy, which is why those songs endure despite not being chart hits.
